Council to decide on EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi’s future

The City of Ekurhuleni council is expected to decide on the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi’s future on Thursday.

The council must decide whether to place Mkhwanazi on precautionary suspension or not.

This comes after council members tabled an urgent motion to place Mkhwanazi on precautionary suspension, but voting was delayed pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Mkhwanazi is alleged to have used his powers to benefit tender tycoon and attempted murder accused, Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Mkhwanazi is currently on special leave following allegations that he supplied Matlala’s private vehicles with EMPD blue lights.

This prompted an internal investigation into Mkhwanazi’s alleged involvement, which is expected to be presented before the Ekurhuleni council.

Members will then vote on the motion based on the strength of the report once it is presented before the council.
