A 47-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged possession of explosives, military uniforms, firearms and unlicensed ammunition in Ekurhuleni on Gauteng’s East Rand.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson Millicent Kekana says law enforcement officials received information that led to the arrest.
Kekana says explosive experts went to the scene and seized the items.
She says the suspect is facing charges of possession of military uniforms, explosives, unlicensed firearms and live ammunition.
The suspect is expected to appear before the court soon.
“While searching the premises, members discovered 79 9mm live ammunition in the main bedroom with 9mm magazines and one R5 magazine. One R5 magazine and 25 R5 live ammunition were also found in the wardrobe along with a SANDF military uniform. There was also an unmounted main safe locked under the stairs, and it was not mounted to the wall. The suspect alleges he had no keys for the safe. Next to the safe was a crate containing 12 various types of lethal explosives. Inside the locked safe, members recovered an R5 rifle, a handgun and a 22rimfire long rifle along with 684 x 9 mm live rounds and 709 x R5 live rounds, 22 x shotgun rounds, 400 x 22 ammunition live rounds and 92 x R1 live rounds.”
