Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s bail appeal application has been denied by the High Court in Johannesburg.
In September, Matlala unsuccessfully applied for bail, with the lower court ruling that he is a flight risk and a danger to society.
He is facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.
Matlala is accused of orchestrating the failed assassination of his former partner, Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023.

In his judgment, Acting Judge Pieter du Plessis ruled that the interest of justice will not be served by releasing Matlala on bail.
Du Plessis also stated that he is unable to differ with the magistrate’s findings in her judgment in regard to Matlala being a flight risk and specifically the conclusion where it was stated that he has both the means and the potential opportunity to evade trial.
This is despite Matlala’s defence claiming that the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court erred in its decision to deny him bail.
