Gauteng’s Crime Prevention Wardens
The Gauteng government is yet to reclassify the Crime Prevention Wardens who are popularly known as AmaPanyaza.
Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka recommended the reclassification after finding that the establishment of the wardens was irregular.
The Public Protector’s investigation also found that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi had no legal basis on which to recruit, train or deploy the wardens for police duties.
Lesufi says the wardens will undergo a phased training to be designated the same legal standing as traffic police.
Gcaleka outlines some of her recommendations.
“In the recruitment/deployment of the wardens what really did not happen was the due process in terms of the law. The remedial action we have taken first and foremost and is to the Premier of Gauteng. He needs to ensure in terms of executive and oversight powers conferred to him in terms of Section 125 – 2 of the constitution – basically they have to undergo the required training. The province has to ensure that there’s cooperative, governance in line with Section 41 of the constitution and that there’s none encroaching of powers.”
