Ramokgopa announces country’s pivot to cleaner energy sources

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced the country’s attempts to cleaner energy sources and less reliance on fossil fuels. He was presenting South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan(IRP), calling it the biggest post- apartheid investment the country has made. Addressing the media in Pretoria, Ramokgopa said the plan is aimed at driving the country’s energy agenda, and create more jobs, and grow the economy.

We are presenting to you, not just an electricity programme but in fact we’re responding to an economic question, so we’re presenting to the country a R2,3 trillion investment programme and on the back of this we’re going to industrialise, and get people into jobs. The third thing that we’re doing is that for the first time since the recorded history of this country- especially on the production side of electricity- for the first time now, we’re going to see that electricity that is generated from cleaner sources of energy –  is going to be greater than the fossil fuels.
