The annual migration of the humpback whales and sea turtles to Richards Bay’s waters from June to November each year is under severe threat from pollution.
The natural spectacle has become a significant draw for tourists on South Africa’s east and west coasts.
Dockside Cruises spokesperson Mazwi Dubazane says, “In South Africa, we have a migration of humpback whales from Antarctica to the Indian Ocean. It’s unfortunate with all the pollution, but naturally, the whales, the females who were born in Richards Bay on the east coast, will always return to Richards Bay.”
“It’s the same with the sea turtles. Those who were born in this harbour will always travel back from Antarctica to this port. Though we’ve got a problem of pollution, I think Richards Bay is one of the cleanest waters.”
