Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi speaks at an event
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has called for the school’s curriculum to embrace cultural customs.
The premier was speaking at the Kagiso Sports Complex in the West Rand, where hundreds of Gauteng residents gathered to celebrate Heritage Day.
Today, we honour the vibrancy the many diverse cultures, traditions and histories that unite us and shape our province. Heritage Day is a powerful reminder that our diversity is not just our strength but our shared identity. #HeritageDay2025 pic.twitter.com/XQF3mzBsce

Gauteng has more than 110 museums and five heritage sites.
Lesufi says the heritage sites must be properly maintained.
“There will challenges obviously with maintaining some of these particular sites and that is why days like today serve as a reminder that don’t ignore those important sites.
Ensure that they are functional, ensure that they are not white elephants and ensure that they are utilized.”

Earlier, Acting President Paul Mashatile said heritage is a foundation for building a dynamic, socially responsive, technologically innovative and economically inclusive future.
This year’s Heritage Month is celebrated with the theme: Re-imagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era.
Celebrations focussed on how society, through culture, continues to evolve in response to social, economic, and technological challenges.
Mashatile delivered the keynote address at the Bridgeton Sports Grounds in the Oudtshoorn Local Municipality, Western Cape.
