Disaster management teams across KwaZulu-Natal have been placed on standby to react to possible disruptive rainfall.
The provincial Department of Cooperative Governance says the South African Weather Service has issued warnings for the whole of the province for Wednesday and the rest of the week.
The rain can lead to flooding and fast-flowing streams. Areas which could experience a significant impact include the Durban metro, Ladysmith, Newcastle and the northwest of the province, as well as the North Coast.
The department’s spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila says people should prepare emergency kits with essentials like medication and documents.
Mzila says people are advised to stay indoors unless they’re being asked to evacuate an area.
“Similarly, across the whole province various sector departments, including the Road Traffic Inspectorate, across municipalities – their traffic officials – will also be monitoring key routes to ensure the safe traveling of residents. The inclement weather conditions could result in the flooding of roads and low-lying settlements, damage to homes and public infrastructure. It could also end up in the disruption of essential services and increased risk to human and animal life.”
