National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola says phone records obtained from murder accused Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, have implicated suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya in the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team(PKTT).
“This record suggests that Sibiya’s actions were not merely procedural but tied to deeper connections with individuals identified as members of the cartel. The timing and urgency of his compliance appeared to align with imperatives to shield cartel members from ongoing investigations. This is a subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.”
Testifying at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria, Masemola says although there was an attempt to disband the PKTT, it continues to operate, with police in the process of establishing another unit in Gauteng.
He says the task team’s work was effective until it was disbanded at the order of Minister Senzo Mchunu.
