Case against Volksrust R350 million drug lab operators postponed

The case against five suspects who were arrested for running a clandestine drug lab in Volksrust in Mpumalanga, has been postponed to the 26th of October.

Four Mexican nationals and one South African were arrested on Friday evening after police raided a crystal meth drug lab worth over R350 million on a plot in Volksrust.

They made their first appearance in court this afternoon after spending the weekend behind bars.

Two other suspects, alleged to be Nigerian nationals who are also believed to be part of the operation, managed to flee when police arrived at the scene.

The case has been postponed to allow the state time to secure the services of a Spanish interpreter.

The accused are facing possible charges of manufacturing of drugs, drug trafficking, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Mpumalanga says should the accused opt to apply for bail; they will oppose their applications due to the seriousness of the charges they are facing.
