The Correctional Services Department says the National Summit on the Parole Review System forms part of a comprehensive process to address concerns regarding the parole set-up.
The summit kicked off on Monday at the management area of the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
It aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to develop strategies that will ensure the successful reintegration of offenders.
National Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale says the parole system has been under pressure in recent times, due to practical examples of what parolees become when they get released and when they are completing their sentence amongst members of the community.
“The victims have a perspective, the parolees themselves have a perspective, different structures in communities have a perspective. We also as the department have a perspective and our perspective is very simple, it is that when you are on parole, you are still serving a sentence and you need to comply with the conditions of parole,” says Thobakgale.
