‘I would disobey’ the Minister on police operations: Masemola

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has admitted that he would disobey an instruction from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu if it violated operational matters in the police force.

Masemola is giving testimony at the Madlanga Commissioner of Inquiry on the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Masemola’s comments come as Mchunu took a decision to disband the PKTT last year, without the go-ahead from the national commissioner.

“Yes, it depends on the Commissioner. But yes, I would. It’s a matter that is career-limited. It depends on what? It depends on how he does it.”

Mchunu disbanded the task team in December 2024, a decision which KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described as politically motivated and aimed at shielding powerful individuals involved in crime.

Masemola says Mchunu is not responsible for police operations.

‘Lack of essential resources’

The Police Commissioner also reveals that the task team was hampered by a lack of essential resources, including effective prosecutorial and investigative strategies.

According to the commissioner, these shortcomings resulted in no significant successes in addressing political killings, ultimately leading to the dissolution of the team.
