KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi arrives to give testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The Mkhize family at KwaNzimakwe area on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal have lost hope in the criminal court justice system. In 2012, the family lost Wandile Mkhize, who was shot dead.
Mkhize was a African National Congress (ANC) chief whip in the Ugu District Municipality.
His brother, Nkosingiphile Mkhize, believes political connection and interference played a critical role in the case.
In the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the 78 year-old, Nokuthula Mkhize, the mother of the assassinated ANC leader struggle to find closure. It has been 13 years since her son was brutally killed in a case that remains unresolved.
Now, Nokuthula is pinning her hopes on the Madlanga Commission.
This as Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi’s testimony before the commission also focused on the 121 controversial dockets that were removed from the provincial task team on political killings to Pretoria.
She says life without her son has been tough.
“There are times where I really miss my son, but unfortunately, the killers were not arrested. He was everything to me and he was supporting the family and the whole community of KwaNzimakwe,” says Mkhize.
Councillor Mkhize was gunned down when he returned from an ANC conference in Midland. The task team was formed to investigate the killing and two suspects were arrested, but later released on technicalities.
His young brother Nkosingiphile Mkhize alleged political interference in the case.

“There were people who were arrested after the death of my brother, but were later released. Nobody was called to testify, but only police. There are many witnesses that were supposed to be called, but were never called and I don’t know why. I commend Castin and Nzama for their good work,” says Mkhize’s brother.
“I can say I haven’t lost faith in the criminal court of justice but it is because only the few men in blue uniform who work against the system. The faith that I have is on those guys who are tasked to do their job, because what brings hope today is to see big men struggling to get bail and that tells you that there is hope if you have the right people,” he adds.
This while his family rallies behind the Madlanga Commission.
“I am very glad and very happy and I fully supports the commission and I know that sometimes the findings of some of the commissions are not implemented, but as family, we fully support Mkhwanazi. I heard Mkhwanazi mentioning that even cases of 2011 and that gives me hope that there is a lot that will be exposed,” he says.
According to Nkosingiphile Mkhize, they have no doubt that Mkhize’s death was political motivated as he rallied against any form of corruption and financial embezzlement at the municipality.
“I have no doubt that his death was political motivated and he was against people who wanted to enrich themselves at the expense of poor people. My brother wanted all people to benefit not individuals,” says Mkhize.
Despite being subjected to threats in efforts to silence them, the family say they will continue to seek justice.
