Cele accused of pressuring officials to derail disciplinary process

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanzi says he was upset at former Police Minister Bheki Cele, after he allegedly tried interfering in a disciplinary process against Crime Intelligence Boss, Feroz Khan.

Mkhwanazi has told the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria that Cele requested General Dumisani Khumalo, a member of Crime Intelligence tasked to handle the disciplinary matter, to resign and assist in fighting crime in Gauteng.

Mkhwanazi says he believes this was an attempt by Cele to avert the process against Khan.

He has also accused Khan of feeding crime intelligence information to Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu’s alleged associate, Brown Mogotsi.

“General Khumalo just laughed and said ‘don’t worry. The general is not serious about that’. I asked what he meant and he said he wanted me to back off on the case against General Khan from Crime Intelligence,” says Mkhwanazi.

He says Cele is pursuing General Khumalo to resign from the police so that he can stay away from the disciplinary case because he was appointed to deal with that case, departmentally against General Khan.

“General Khumalo says this is the approach of Cele. He wants me to back off,” adds Mkhwanazi.
