Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster and Brand South Africa Cluster Media Roundtable, September 20, 2025.
At least R34 million a year is spent on the protection of state prosecutors.
This was revealed during the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster roundtable in Houghton, Johannesburg.
The cluster has raised concerns about the safety of whistleblowers, investigators and prosecutors.
In recent years, the lives of whistleblowers have been at risk. Some, like Babita Deokaran, lost their lives for speaking out.
The Special Investigating Unit believes the individuals who speak against corruption need to be protected, as state prosecutors are also in danger.
The National Director of Public Prosecution, Advocate Shamila Batohi, says: “We deal with 150 000 cases a year in the NPA by prosecutors around the country who put their lives at risk. In the Western Cape, we deal with the most hard and dangerous criminals in the world, where prosecutors are fighting these criminals every day. It is becoming an increasingly dangerous environment.”
