Bester back in Free State High Court for final pre-trial hearing

The final pre-trial hearing in the case of the escape of murder and rape convict Thabo Bester from prison is expected to take place in the Free State High Court on Friday.

Bester’s co-accused and girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, her father Zolile Sekeleni and former prison guards Senohe Matsoara, Teboho Lipholo and Tieho Makhotsa, and others face various charges. These include aiding Bester in escaping from prison, arson, and violating a corpse.

Bester, who escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein in May 2022, remains adamant that he does not have enough time to consult with his lawyers.

He insists that this will not guarantee that he gets a fair trial.

The issue of his legal fees will also have to be clarified before the court proceeds to trial.

Another matter that needed to be addressed was the legal representation of Dr. Nandipha Magudumana’s father, Zolile Sekeleni, after his application for legal aid was rejected.
