Elderly NC man sentenced to 25 years for raping mentally-ill woman

The Mothibistad Regional Court in the Northern Cape has sentenced a man to 25 years behind bars for the rape of a mentally-ill woman.

In October 2023, the 66-year-old man raped the woman, who was 18 at the time.

The court heard that the man had offered to take the rape survivor to church, but instead drove to a dumping site where he had raped her and offered her R30.

Northern Cape Provincial Police spokesperson Molefi Shemane says, “The case stems from an incident that occurred on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at approximately 11h00, when the 18-year-old victim was on her way to church in Kagung Village, Mothibistad. The accused, who is a neighbour of the victim, offered her a lift. Instead of taking her directly to church, he drove to a dumping site where he forcefully raped her. After the assault, he gave her R30 and instructed her not to tell anyone.”

“When the victim returned home, her mother noticed that she had money and questioned her about it. The victim then disclosed the ordeal to her mother, who immediately reported the matter to the police. A case was registered and the accused was subsequently arrested.”
