SA behind in embracing digital transformation: Schreiber

Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber says South Africa is behind other countries in embracing digital transformation to avoid identity fraud.

He was in Parliament on Wednesday to respond to oral questions.

Government is collaborating with the banking sector and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in its effort to digitise Home Affairs services.

This includes applying for smart card identity documents and passports.

Schreiber says, “The agreements have been updated with eight banks, with one outstanding agreement still being finalised. Once completed, the first roll-out will prioritise rural and townships branches as part of the service expansion.”

He says, “Taking together this digital first reform will cut queues and enhance the Home Affairs services on an unprecedented scale by bringing services closer to where people live than ever before. We are bringing to life the use of our digital vision transformation to deliver Home Affairs at home.”
