Community activists on the Cape Flats say residents of the area are living in fear as gang violence escalates. More than a dozen people have been killed in the violence in the past week. This includes shooting incidents in Kraaifontein.
Chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum, Norman Jantjes says they have noticed an increase in coordinated attacks.
“If we look at the first three months of this year, we had an average of 15 murders a month. I think since April it started going up and now in August it was even worse. I think we had more than 20 murders for the month of August. We’re in September now, it is only the 16th, and we’ve seen I think we’re standing around about eight now for the month. So yes, we’ve seen an escalation over the past few months, and it looks like it’s a sustained thing and it’s highly organised.”
Chairperson of the Cape Flats Safety Forum, Abie Isaacs says the Cape Flats is under siege and the SANDF should come into the area to restore order.
