The school has over 2,000 learners and has been asking for additional classrooms since 2007.
A Grade 11 learner from the Cibeni High School in Libode in the Eastern Cape has allegedly been assaulted by the principal.
The learner says fellow learners and the principal were mocking her. The learner then left the classroom crying, and the principal allegedly beat and injured her.
The learner says she is struggling to write exams. “The teacher said, ‘Sit down polony’ and everyone laughed at me. I cried and went outside. I came across the teacher and he asked me what I was doing in class. He started beating me while we were outside. He then took me to his office and started beating me again. He pushed me against the wall, pointing at my forehead, saying I must not disrespect him. He pushed me again, and I hit the cardboard and fell. He then took me to the classroom and told me to tell the other learners why I was being disrespectful. I told him that I did not want to be called polony. He then took me to his office to hit me again. I cried and knelt down, and I asked him for forgiveness.”
The provincial education department’s spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima says they are investigating the allegations.
