Merafong residents vow to shut down area if water problems persist

Residents of Kokosi township in southern Gauteng are threatening to shut down the entire area if their water supply is not restored by Friday.

The Merafong Municipality is currently grappling with severe water shortages after failing to settle a R1.4 billion debt with Rand Water.

Last week, frustrated residents blocked the provincial road.

Residents say access to clean water has become a daily struggle.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says bulk water supply remains reduced.

“After months of deliberation the two parties could not find an amicable solution. As the municipality continuously refused to honour its account with Rand Water. To date the municipality owes Rand Water over R1.4 billion. The situation is highly untenable and destabilises Rand Water’s financial position as it poses a direct threat to its medium- and long-term sustainability.”
