Taxis parked at a rank
The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) says it is considering taking legal action to prevent the closure of several taxi routes in Cape Town from Wednesday.
Last week, the Western Cape government announced the closure of a number of routes following an increase in taxi-related violence.
At least eight people have been shot dead.
Taxi commuters in areas including Khayelitsha, Mfuleni and Nomzama will be forced to find alternative transport.
The closures will be in place for 30 days.
Codeta spokesperson Nceba Enge says it remains open to negotiations with rival association, the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), to resolve ongoing route disputes.
“In terms of an agreement that has not been reached yet. We are encouraging our colleagues, the CATA executive together with the Codeta executive to continue with the meetings. Remember you disagree to agree so at the end of the day, a solution will be found from the meeting – so we are encouraging us to have those meetings.”
