All eyes to be on Mkhwanazi as first witness at Madlanga Commission

All eyes will be on KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, as the first witness in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday.

The commission will investigate allegations of interference and corruption in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

During a media conference in July, Mkhwanazi made allegations that politicians and some senior police officials had links to criminal syndicates.

He named Police Minister Senzo Mchunu as allegedly having links with a crime syndicate.

Mchunu has since been placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Political analyst Professor Bheki Mngomezulu says Mkhwanazi has a commendable track record.

“When he was acting commissioner of the police, he did a sterling job. In fact, in some instances talking truth to power and not bowing to any intimidation as long as he was operating within the confines of the law. So, the decision for him to convene a media briefing and to make explosive salvos was informed by his track record as someone who is principled, as someone who is levelheaded and as someone who acts ethically.”
