The City of Ekurhuleni will hold meetings with residents next week, on Saturday and the week thereafter, on the contentious R126 fixed electricity tariff charge for prepaid customers.
This comes after Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza suspended the fee in July and directed that there be proper and thorough consultations with residents.
Angry residents took to the streets in violent protests against the increase, saying they can not afford it. It was also established that the public was not properly consulted about the charge.
The City of Ekurhuleni says it will hold two separate public consultation meetings at 11 o’clock on Saturday, the 20th of September, one at the Kwathema Civic Hall with residents of KwaThema, Brakpan, Springs, and Nigel. While the other meeting will be held at the Boksburg City Hall with residents of Germiston, Boksburg, Thokoza, Alberton and Benoni also at eleven oçlock. Then on the Saturday, the 27th of September, the City will consult on the fixed electricity tariff charge with residents of Thembisa, Kempton Park, and Edenvale at the Rabasotho Hall in Thembisa. This meeting is also scheduled for 11:00 AM.
