Kubayi calls for patience as department works on repatriating remains

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says her department is working around the clock to ensure that the process of repatriating remains of political activists is fast-tracked.

Her comments follow her department handing over 180 remains of political prisoners. This includes 81 political prisoners executed under apartheid who have been exhumed and reburied across the country.

Kubayi was speaking in Komani in the Eastern Cape, where the remains of political activists, Mncekeleli Boskati, Madoda Ralane and Wantu Silinga were being reburied. She calls for patience as her department is in the process of engaging with other countries in repatriating more remains.

“Currently, we are working on phase two so we can be able to repatriate outside the country. However, there are other families who are saying they don’t want it to happen. So there are people who are saying no, but then other countries are saying this is part of their heritage, so those negotiations are not easy. We have got a balance, and between that, continuous conversations are being had.”
