Possible discovery of missing pilot’s body in Durban: Police

The body of missing pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray may have washed up on the Durban beachfront on Friday night, according to the police.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson – Robert Nesthiunda, says an unidentified body in a flight suit was found on the edge of the water at Bay of Plenty beach.

Blackwood-Murray’s light plane crashed into the sea near Suncoast Beach about a month ago during a display flight.

He was performing the display for a group of school children who had attended an international aviation conference in Durban.

In a prolonged and extensive search, pieces of the plane were recovered, but Blackwood-Murray remained missing. Netshiunda says an inquest docket has been opened following the discovery of the body.

“The unidentifiable body was possibly washed out from the ocean and was wearing a flight suit. Preliminary investigations suggest that it could be the body of the pilot who crashed into the sea last month, however, formal identification processes will be conducted to ascertain the body’s identity.”
