Five dead, nine injured in Pietermaritzburg scholar transport crash


The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has confirmed that the learners who were involved in a crash that claimed five lives and injured nine Pietermaritzburg are from several schools in the Umgungundlovu District. The pupils were all passengers in the taxi, which was being used as a scholar transport.

It is alleged that on Thursday morning, the driver lost control and crashed into a creche in Imbali. However, none of creche’s learners were injured.

Department Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the department is working with schools to assist all affected parents.

“The Department of Education in KZN is saddened to receive  more bad news today following the incident in King Cetshwayo on Wednesday where one learner died after a truck reversed over her. This morning at Imbali Section 18 in Pietermaritzburg, we received the news that a taxi ferrying learners  from various schools lost control and hit a tree before plunging into a Daycare Centre.”
