Westbury protest against a lack of water infrastructure over several years.
The national government has urged residents of Westbury and Coronationville to exercise their right to protest responsibly and peacefully without damaging infrastructure.
Government has also directed the City of Johannesburg to implement interim measures to address the current water supply challenges.
This comes after angry residents took to the streets, blockading the main roads in and around the area with burning tyres and rocks, raising their frustration over prolonged water supply challenges.
Johannesburg Water has since announced medium-to-long-term measures to mitigate against the strain, which it says is caused by low water levels in some of the reservoirs supplying the affected areas.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Deputy Government spokesperson William Baloyi says the government has acknowledged the seriousness of water challenges.
“Government acknowledges the seriousness of these concerns and is working on long-term sustainable solutions to ensure a reliable water supply to the affected communities. We want to appeal to communities to allow these measures to be carried out without disrupting the workers, as any interference will delay the implementation.”
