Police officers urged to seek wellness intervention for mental health issues

Tshwane District Police Commissioner Samuel Thine has appealed to SAPS members to utilize employee wellness services for mental health support after a 32-year-old police constable held his mother and 18-year-old nephew hostage.

Another teenager, a 14-year-old managed to escape.

The constable later shot and killed his nephew before turning the gun on himself just hours after freeing his mother.

Thine says such services are meant to assist members as they experience a variety of challenges.

“We got all avenues. We got our employee health and relations available for the members, as they go through the difficulties, to say consult the structures so that they can get assistance. Obviously, the employee relations they go from station to station, where they engage with members and encourage them that in times of difficulties, they must be able to contact them and assistance.”
