FILE | SANDF soldiers deployed on the Cape Flats in 2019
Some people on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape are calling for the deployment of soldiers to restore calm in their area.
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court last week.
A man was gunned down and two people were wounded during the attack.
Cape Flats Safety Forum Chairperson, Abie Isaacs, says they are under siege from gang violence.
“As we’ve always been saying, the Cape Flats is under siege. People are dying hence we’ve been calling persistently calling for the SANDF (South African National Defence Force) to be deployed just to stabilise the area whilst the minister is going to the drawing board but for now, we need SANDF to be brought in. Secondly, we need a special probe on gun violence because clearly guns have become the murder weapon in and around the Cape Flats.”
