Authorities disturbed by child grooming claims at Tiyelelani High

Authorities in Pretoria say they are deeply disturbed by numerous allegations of child grooming and statutory rape at Tiyelelani High School in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.

This is according to a statement by City of Tshwane, Community and Social Development Services MMC Palesa Modise.

Her comments come after learners at the school staged protests against alleged sexual assaults by teachers.

The protests were supported by the Congress of South African Students.

Last week, the Gauteng Education Department, announced the temporary removal of a primary school principal in the city following allegations that he raped a learner.

Modise says her office as well as other spheres of government will provide necessary support.

Modise says preliminary assessments have revealed that a significant number of learners are experiencing severe trauma because of these alleged sexual grooming incidents and that, there is an urgent need for psychosocial support and professional intervention.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development in Tshwane has immediately deployed social workers to the school.

Modise says she will continue to work closely with law enforcement, education authorities and other stakeholders to address this matter decisively and to ensure that there is accountability where violations have occurred.
