The bereaved families of fallen heroes and heroines lay their wreaths at the SAPS Memorial Site.
Acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, says it is important to salute the men and women in blue, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
He was delivering the welcoming address at the South African Police Service National Commemoration Day at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The SAPS, bereaved families and government officials gathered to memorialise 27 officers and reservists who died in the past financial year.
Cachalia says the memory of these officers will live on.
Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has also paid tribute to the bereaved families of police officers who lost their lives.
Acknowledging the families, he promised that the police service will not fail the children of the fallen officers, in terms of their educational needs until the level of tertiary education.
