AI in media space a major cause of disinformation: Tlakula

The South African Information Regulator says artificial intelligence in the media space has become a major cause of disinformation and fake news.

The remarks were made on day two of the M20 Summit, which kicked off on Monday in Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

The Summit runs on the sidelines of the G20 programme in South Africa.

The focus of the Summit is on the role of media and journalism in fostering information integrity as a cornerstone for human rights, effective governance, international cooperation and public trust needed for social and economic development.

Chairperson of the South African Information Regulator, Advocate Pansy Tlakula says, “If you look at deep fakes, whoever’s image is used or voice, because image is personal information so the person whose image is used to spread disinformation has their privacy also affected, so these are very important discussions. Information integrity is something the whole world is talking about and I am pleased that the M20 is focusing on information integrity.”
