IPID arrests 35-year-old officer for murder of Gauteng warden murder

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested a 35-year-old Constable linked to the murder of the Gauteng Crime Warden, Chesnay Kepler.

The officer, who is attached to the Crime Prevention Unit at the Eldorado Park Police Station, is accused of attempted murder and failing to report a crime scene to IPID.

Kepler was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Mandla Buthelezi, with his service pistol last December. Buthelezi, who is out on bail, was also stationed at the Eldorado Park Police Station at the time of the incident.

IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, says the man was with Buthelezi at the time of the incident.

“The 35-year-old CPU member arrested today was with Buthelezi at the time of the incident. He allegedly assaulted Chesnay Keppler’s three friends after they were engaged in an argument with him.

“Thereafter, the Constable fired shots in the direction of Kepler’s friends, who decided to leave. The accused will remain in custody until his first court appearance on Monday, 01 September 2025, at the Protea Magistrate’s Court,” Suping adds.
