Westbury residents vow to continue with protests over water cuts

Residents of Westbury in Johannesburg have vowed to continue with their protest action until their demands are met.

Disgruntled community members took to the streets on Tuesday and barricaded roads with rocks and burning tyres over water outages.

They say the water supply has been inconsistent for eight years now and they have been without water for five consecutive days.

The residents say the City of Johannesburg is undermining them, as the problem has been going on for close to a decade.

Meanwhile, Iven Leon, who is a pensioner on chronic medication, says he has not bathed in three days.

“We are suffering. I have never bathed for three days now. I’m also on medication; I’m diabetic. What’s happening in our community is bad. How many times have we called our councillors? It’s a different story every time.”
