Gwarube calls for improvements in foundation phase education

Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, has emphasised the importance of getting the foundation phase right in order to achieve optimum results.

She was speaking at the G20 Basic Education National Indaba at the Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town, in the Western Cape this morning.

Gwarube says they want to build an education system where all children, regardless of their background, are able to access quality education.

She was addressing stakeholders who include education professionals and learners, gathered for a one-day national indaba on education.

“If we get the foundations of learning right, we won’t obsess about whether or not children are taking math and science when they get to matric and we won’t obsess about matric pass rate and whether we are hitting those notes because that will already be set from the very foundations of learning,” says Gwarube.
