Mpumalanga motorists urged to be cautious amid veld fire smoke

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison is urging motorists to remain extra vigilant on the roads due to smoky conditions across some parts of the province.

This is due to veld fires which broke out in several areas. The affected areas and roads include the N17 near Ermelo, N4 between Witbank towards Mbombela, the R536 in Sabie and R537 between Mbombela and Lydenburg.

The Department’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi says, “We are appealing to motorists to reduce speed and also maintain prudent following distance.”

“They also need to adjust their driving and operating speed in line with the prevailing weather conditions. For instance, where there is smoke out of veld fires and where there is mist on certain roads due to the weather, they need to do that in order to save lives. But most importantly, they need to be cautious as well.”
