Ridzani Primary School in Limpopo ceiling collapse.
Parents and teachers at Dingamanzi Primary School outside Giyani in Limpopo say shoddy workmanship by the contractor led to a ceiling collapsing on the learners on Tuesday.
Twenty-three learners sustained injuries, three of them were seriously hurt. The learners were treated and discharged from a local clinic and from Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani.
The school is being renovated to the tune of R15 million.
The education department has promised to deliver mobile classrooms.
The contractor is yet to comment.
School Governing Body member, Victor Mabunda, says they have been complaining for a long time about the poor workmanship.
“Yes, that was what was deliberated during the progress meetings about the work that was being done by the contractors. It was shoddy and the contractor is using cheap labour and using very small nails to fit the ceiling. That may be why the ceiling collapsed,” says Mabunda.
He says the children will not attend school until they receive mobile classrooms.
“We hope the lessons will resume by Monday. As the situations is now … the department promised us that by the end of today we should have received five mobile classrooms, because presently, we have four mobile classrooms and are running short of five. They are saying we are going to receive them. As soon as we do, we are definitely sure that on Monday the learners will be in classes,” he adds.
