Driver licenses being printed.
The Department of Transport says it is hopeful that by December it would have cleared the current backlog of driving license cards.
The department has a backlog of over 500 000 driving licenses that still need to be printed.
Department spokesperson Collen Msibi says since they fixed the printing machine in May, they have been able to print more than 800 000 driving license cards.
Msibi says drivers who are still waiting for their license cards, can use the receipt of their license renewal if they made the application before the current one expires.
“Since the end of May until the 11th of August we’ve been able to print up to 834 000 drivers’ license cards. But it leaves us with 539 000 backlog. And the reason is that while there’s that backlog where the machine was not working, we still receive applications from motorists on a daily basis.”
“I mean on a daily basis we get about more than 10 000 applications. So, that is why the backlog is difficult for it to go down. But we’ve given ourselves up until December to be able to complete the backlog,” explains Msibi.
