City Park in Mahikeng, government-owned land.
Homeless children are roaming the streets of Mahikeng in North West during the day and sleeping in the cold at night. This while government officials occupy Park City in Golf View, a government property that used to house the children.
The intricacies of homelessness in the area highlights the appalling conditions homeless children are exposed to.
From using drugs to being physically and sexually abused, their lives are now shaped by social ills, while resources were initially put in place to protect them.
According to community activist, Thato Molosankwe, the home was turned into accommodation for government officials.
“A house that was bought for them around the year 2000 is now occupied by top officials within government, the Department of Social Development and there are allegations that there are top ANC officials living there. They stay comfortably here with their families; you can see expensive cars here. These are the people with money and there are allegations they pay from R150 to R1,000.”
