Two life terms handed to NC man who hacked partner, stepson to death

A man who hacked his partner and stepson to death with an axe in Britstown in the Northern Cape, has been sentenced to two life terms.

The Britstown Regional Court sentenced 46-year-old Nathan Olifant for the murders of Patricia Olifant and his stepson, Romanio Welkom, in June 2023.

Police Spokesperson, Timothy Sam, says the two were discovered with multiple head wounds.

“Following the incident, the accused attempted to take his life, but was prevented from doing so by his brother-in-law and community members, who subsequently handed him over to the police. The court found Olifant guilty on both counts of murder and sentenced him to two life terms, declaring him unfit to possess a firearm,” says Sam.
