Suspect arrested for attempting to rob 3 DA MPs to appear in court

One of the two suspects arrested in connection with the attempted hijacking of three Members of Parliament in Philippi is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on the Cape Flats on Thursday morning.

Ian Cameron, Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell were returning from a work trip when their vehicle was ambushed on Tuesday.

Cameron, who is the chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, retaliated by opening fire, wounding one of the suspects.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says the 16-year-old was arrested in Brown’s Farm on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old suspect, who was also arrested on Tuesday while seeking medical attention after a gunshot was allegedly fired from the vehicle, will not be appearing in court on Thursday as he is still under police guard in hospital.

The suspects face attempted murder and attempted hijacking charges.

Western Cape police say no other arrests have been made yet.

However, City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member of Safety and Security JP Smith, told SABC News during a live interview on Wednesday that a third suspect has been arrested.
