Smart ID cards, passports saved following fire at Home Affairs

Gauteng Home Affairs Provincial Manager, Mamokubung Moroke, has confirmed that important documents including smart ID cards and passports are safe.

This follows the fire that broke out at the Germiston Home Affairs offices by angry residents of the Pharoe Park flats, in Ekurhuleni.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s sheriff office received a court order to evict unpaying residents deemed to be unlawfully occupying the flats.

Residents took it to the streets and consequently burnt the Home Affairs offices in anger.

Two people have since been arrested.

Moroke says plans are in place to help clients where necessary.

“Of the documents that we request clients to still come through for, is people who have applied for the late registration of birth. We will request that clients need to go and resubmit. There will be trucks that will be stationed at both Alberton and Boksburg office for Germiston clients to go get assistance.” – Reporting by Puseletso Mokoena
