Stock theft and limited resources in police stations remain a concern in the Eastern Cape. The issue was raised to Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha as he was giving a report back on submissions that were in a petition that was handed to him last year, in Mthatha.
Some people shared positive sentiments on measures that are being implemented in addressing their submissions.
Nqatha highlighted actions against extortion.
“As we speak, with the feedback that we have received, some of those garages have opened. Some of those medical practices have returned and opened up, as well. We must work together to build into this work, especially focusing on stock theft,” says Nqatha.

She says the level of impact and the damage in livelihoods that stock theft is making requires them to pay particular attention to strengthen the stock theft units and work with the Department of Justice to ensure that the sentences are harsher.
