Majodina wants Northern Cape’s water project fast-tracked

Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina wants National Treasury to expedite the release of funds to complete the Integrated Bulk Water Supply System in the Northern Cape.

Majodina made the remarks at an oversight inspection at Riverton Water Treatment Plant. The R2.7 billion project is in its third year and was expected to be completed in the next four years. The project started in 2023 as an intervention at Sol Plaatje Municipality to deal with water challenges.

Minister Majodina says the time frame needs to be reconsidered.

“I hope that once we complete this project, there will be no water woes in the Northern Cape. However, I am not happy with the process that is going to take up to seven years. What we are going to do now is to motivate to National Treasury to say they must front-load us because there is capacity now to build. The delays on this site were due to some of the equipment that is not easily available in South Africa. They had to be ordered abroad,” says Majodina.
