A 39-year-old man, Clifford Ngwenya, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ermelo Regional Court in Mpumalanga for raping his former landlord in 2021.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, says Ngwenya denied the rape allegations. He claims that Ngwenya and the victim met at a tavern and later argued over money.
Nyuswa says the court rejected Ngwenya’s claims.
Neighbours alerted by screams for help rushed to the scene, found her severely assaulted, with the accused was still inside the house. When confronted, Ngwenya fled the scene by jumping out a window. Members of the community chased and apprehended him before handing him over to the police.
Ngwenya was further declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name was ordered to be entered into the national register for sex offenders.
