Maternity patients diverted due to closure of ward at National District Hospital in Bloem

The Free State Health Department says it is diverting maternity patients to relevant health facilities following the closure of the maternity ward at the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Health Spokesperson Mondli Mvambi says the closure follows the issuing of Prohibition Notice by the Department of Labour against the maternity ward due to low temperatures.

“The Department of Labour and Employment has issued a Prohibition Notice against the 21-bedded Maternity Ward at the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein due to low temperatures in the ward.

The hospital has activated the diversion of low-risk cases to MUCPP, while high-risk maternity cases will be attended to at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital.

The Department is actively addressing the situation through the Infrastructure Unit of the Provincial Department of Health.”
