High demand for night shelters in CT amid inclement weather

Night shelters in Cape Town are reporting being overstretched.

This as many people seek accommodation following the inclement weather of the past few weeks. Heavy rains and extreme cold have affected thousands of people in the city.

The Elim Night Shelter in Elsies River on the Cape Flats says it has been forced to turn some people away.

Shafeek Ortell is the manager, “We have lots of people coming to our gates or being referred to by other institutions and we find it difficult because we a have a limited bedspace where the male beds are full which normally are not. And also, that increases our expenditure on food, people come to our gates, people come for blankets, we want to assist them all, but we’ve run out of all these things that we can assist them with. Our dorms are full and we have to turn people away.”
