Hawks arrest suspect on fraud and money laundering allegations
Ten people, including police officers and a traffic official, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, on allegations of theft, fraud, extortion and corruption.
The accused were arrested earlier this week, accused of stealing approximately R900 000 from a store at Dragon City mall in central Johannesburg during a police operation on Monday.
Only a portion of the money was officially recorded.
Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo says the store owner told police investigators about the alleged theft.
“Preliminary investigation was launched, and the Hawks traced the suspects to Newtown. Upon searching several vehicles at the scene, they recovered a substantial amount of cash from one of the vehicles.
“Further investigations linked four additional officials to the scene of the alleged crime. These newly implicated officials have since been arrested and are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 04 July 2025, where they will join their six co-accused,” Mbambo explains.
