The Northern Cape High Court has found a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier, Desmond Zwakala guilty of shooting and killing Kimberley Boys High learner, Amogelang Assegai. His co-accused, who was allegedly the driver of the vehicle that sped off after Assegai was shot, was found not guilty.
Assegai was killed in October 2022 after Zwakala accused him of stealing his son’s cellphone.

Keabetswe Seakeco, the deceased teenager’s sister, says they can now start the journey of healing.
“Now we can start the journey to healing now that he has been found guilty. We will return to court tomorrow for sentencing. It’s been quite a challenging, tumultuous three years for my family and I and not just my family, but everyone Amogelang has impacted.”
